A Call to Prayer

Throughout the nation, LCMS congregations and schools are being called to pray for the ending of Malaria, help for those who battle this disease, and mercy for the children who have few defenses for fighting. We can make a difference in this disease where one child in Africa dies every sixty seconds.

LCMS President Matt Harrison is inviting each of us to help “make a big difference for the people of Africa who are suffering from malaria. Join us in prayer on April 25 to life up all those who facing the devastating effects of malaria.”

Join us, in prayer, tomorrow – Wednesday, April 25 at 2:40 p.m.

Philippians 2:5-11: Jesus is our precious Savior. He is also our model to show us what it looks like to be His disciples and live lives of obedience and service. What a joy it will be on the last day to be among those people who joyfully bow at the name of Jesus and confess that He alone is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. May we faithfully sing hosanna to the Son of David, our Savior and Lord!

Hebrews 5:1-10: Just as God in Old Testament times called weak and sinful human beings to be priests who called God’s people to be faithful to Him, so He continues to call people like us to be stewards of the mysteries of God so that sinners are encouraged to look to their gracious God for the forgiveness of sins, life and salvation. May we be effective stewards of the good news of salvation in Jesus so that the Holy Spirit can call many more people into the kingdom of God.

Ephesians 2:1-10: By God’s grace we have been saved through faith in Jesus. Nothing that we can do makes any difference as far as our salvation is concerned, but what we do as God’s stewards gives evidence that we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do the good works that God has prepared in advance for us to do. May we do this with joy!

Ash Wednesday

We have a long road a head of us. We follow Jesus to Jerusalem, to the cross and the tomb.

Our Lenten journey will again show us the kindness and generosity, the mercy of God.

But the journey is wasted if we do not understand that we can live merciful lives and as Luther said, “be truly Christians.”

It is all about mercy poured out for us so that we can be merciful.

So tonight we will do some anointing ourselves – we will anoint our foreheads, or at least mark them with ashes. We are dust and to dust we shall return – we are sinners indeed.

But we are also blood children of God, a kingdom of Priests, a holy nation, a people shown mercy so that we can be merciful.

Let the ashes remind you how far you need to go. Let your Prophet, Priest, and King lead you there.

Eternal Father, we thank You for bringing to eternal life all who trust in Your Son and for delivering to paradise those saints who have died. Send Your peace all who mourn, that they may be strengthened by Your gracious promises in Christ and have courage to face their daily challenges.
